Singapore, Former world champion Vladimir Kramnik was not impressed with the quality of chess on display during the World Championship match between D Gukesh and Ding Liren, and called it the “end of chess as we know it.”

Indian Grandmaster Gukesh on Thursday became the youngest world chess champion at 18 years after beating title-holder Ding Liren of China in the 14th and last game of a tense showdown here.

“Frankly, I am very disappointed by today’s game. Even Game 5 was not extremely high level, but today it was really — for a professional — it was really weak play from both players. It’s a very disappointing level,” he had said.

Gukesh broke Kasparov’s record of 22 years, six months and 27 days.

The Indian took the required 7.5 points of Liren over 6.5 as he went on to clinch the last classical time control game in the 14-game match that seemed most of it was headed towards a draw.

As a title winner, Gukesh will also get a large share of the USD 2.5 million prize purse.

Gukesh had entered the match as the youngest ever challenger to the world crown after winning the Candidates tournament earlier this year.

He becomes the second Indian after the mighty Viswanathan Anand to take over the world title. Five-time World Champion Anand had last held the title in 2013 before Magnus Carlsen sent him into first defeat.
