Adapting the Story while Changing Shooting Spots in Haider

While shooting for Haider, the directors, owing to security concerns and nonavailability of permission, could not shoot scenes at places such as Kashmir sometimes. However, they changed the story to minimize these problems:

Replication Places: For places which could not be shot in location in Kashmir the art department made exact miniatures. As in that huge hotel under construction was out because of climactic scenes and instead an equivalent size, and authentically designed miniature structure was erected there too.

Miniature shoots were then performed green screen, over in Mumbai. Motion tracking, projection mapping, and intricate compositing allowed the VFX team to effectively merge the miniatures with location live-action footage shot in Kashmir, all though the added elements of snow and fog.

The scenes requiring explosions and debris were also shot on green screen. The miniature replicas of structures that were called upon were made by the art department. Then, they would be blown up and composited over the live-action footage.

Improvising with Crowd Scenes: They had to improvise with crowd scenes. The song sequence could not be shot fully on location, so they used rotoscopy and motion tracking to composite crowd plates over the original footage.

Adopting the Hand-Held Look: Other than this, the film was shot pretty much on hand-held cameras by Vishal Bhardwaj. This style thus not only changed the look of the film, but the changing locations had to be adapted to.
